When You Believe in God But Don’t Think You Can Change

This is part of a continuing reflection on each chapter of Craig Groeschel’s The Christian Atheist. This is chapter seven.

“Many Christian Atheists live year after year under the illusion that we simply can’t change” (126).

One of my life messages is to accentuate this point. With God, you can change.

Faith is a journey. You are either moving backward, forward or remaining the same.

So many people remain locked and unchanging. Whether it is emotionally, spiritually, or physically, some people never move forward. They usually lack the tools to improve and change, but most likely, they just don’t believe they can change.

As human beings created in the image of God, we can use ALL available tools necessary to bring about change.

Struggling with alcohol? Using the AA resources is as spiritual as using prayer.

Struggling with addiction? Using accountability is as spiritual as breaking ties with demonic forces.

Struggling with anxiety? Gaining a foothold using medication is as Godly as praying for change.

For so many reasons, Christian Atheists simply fail to attempt change. Life doesn’t move forward. Maybe they’ve tried but they soon give up after failing. The “excuse monster” rears its’ ugly head. Maybe they are bound by the false belief that they just are the way they are. Maybe they are mastered by something they aren’t even aware of. At the end of the day, they just give up hope.

Change, they determine, just isn’t possible.

First of all, people must be self-reflective. If you aren’t regularly engaging in self-reflection, honestly, then you need to start.

Second, you need to seek the opinions of other people about who you are. When is the last time you asked someone to evaluate you and what you need to change?

Third, you need to want to change. Personally (and trust me, I’m not perfect), I want to change! I want to grow. I want to be all that I can be! Others, however, don’t.

Fourth, you need to believe that you can change.

Fifth, you must desire change not for your glory, but for the glory of the One who makes change possible – God.

As people who possess hope in the living God through Christ, we have the most incredible resources to change.

“For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.” 2 Corinthians 10:3-5

Remember, change is possible! “Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.’” Mark 10:27

Jesus wants to sanctify and change you! “For this I toil, struggling with all (Christ’s) energy that he powerfully works within me.” Colossians 1:29

Embrace the possibilities. Reflect. Ask others. Fight the battles.

Change is possible.

May you change so the glory of God can be revealed in and through your life!
